Fellows Present Poster Papers at BCLA Asia Tokyo

Following the success of the recently concluded British Contact Lens Association (BCLA) Asia 2026 conference, Philippine College of Optometrists fellows took to the international stage to present two scientific posters, showcasing our organization’s ongoing dedication to clinical research and evidence-based eye care.
The conference, which gathered the world’s leading minds in contact lenses and ocular surface health, provided the perfect backdrop for our fellows to share Filipino insights with the global eye care community.

The two posters presented by our fellows highlighted areas of modern eye care, reflecting the high standard of clinical excellence.
Poster 1: Case Report On Vision Rehabilitation with Scleral Lens On A Patient With Corneal Keloid
Lead Presenter(s): Jeanette R. Oo, OD, FPCO, FIACLE, FAAO, FSLS
Core Focus: Using Scleral Contact Lenses as a Management for Corneal Keloid.
Key Takeaway: Scleral lenses represent a valuable non-invasive option for visual rehabilitation for patients with corneal keloid. It provides excellent optical correction, comfort, and protection of the ocular surface while avoiding the risks of surgery. Early scleral lens fitting can greatly enhance the quality of life for patients with corneal scarring and surface irregularities.

Poster 2: Indications for Scleral Lens Prescribing in A Single Referral Contact Lens Clinic in the Philippines: A 10-year Retrospective Review.
Lead Presenter(s): Millette H. Romualdez, OD, FPCO, FIACLE, FSLS, FBCLA
Core Focus: Though there are established indications of scleral lenses worldwide, there is insufficient data available for Asia. This study described the indications of scleral lens prescribing in a single referral contact lens clinic in the Philippines from 2015 to 2025.
Key Takeaway: Keratoconus is the main indication for fitting scleral lenses. Scleral lenses helped improve the vision of patients with corneal ectasias, ocular surface disease, irregular corneas, and those with regular high astigmatism. More ophthalmologists are becoming aware of the ability of scleral lenses in improving vision, and would refer for a trial fitting before deciding on doing a corneal transplant.

Elevating Patient Care Through Innovation
Scientific posters are a vital part of international conferences. By actively participating in these global conversations, our fellows ensure that the Philippine College of Optometrists remains at the absolute forefront of optometric advancements.
